The Southern Café & Music Hall
Charlottesville, VA. Capacity 300. Est. 2007.
§01 / About the venue
A 300-cap venue
operated by Starr Hill Presents since 2009.
The Southern is the 300-cap room two blocks off the Mall and the only listening room in Charlottesville that runs a full kitchen. Opened in 2007 as the sister venue to the Jefferson, it books the indie, americana, and singer-songwriter end of the calendar. Tables up front for the seated shows, GA standing for the louder bills. The Southern is where artists play the night after the Jefferson when they want a smaller room for the deluxe-edition tour, and where rising acts play the year before they graduate to 750.
Production is in-house D&B Y-series; backline house. Load-in is South 1st Street, ground level. The room shares a booker with the Jefferson and Ting, which means the same name on a contract works the entire calendar from 300 to 3,500. Settlement runs same night. Advance window is two weeks. The Southern punches above weight on talent quality; Pitchfork-favorite acts route through here on every cycle.
